A very rare Antique Minton Majolica 'Protat' Shell Ewer, c1865 Renaissance stye, the sides and pedestal foot with scallop shells, the pedestal foot also shell-molded, a mermaid under the spout, a boy under the raised scroll handle, the eck molded with fish scales. All richly colored on a dark blue ground, "HP" monogram on the handle; HP Protat was a Minton art Director and highly regarded 19th Century Sculptor.
This piece appeared on the cover of the Smithsonian magazine for the Minton majolica exhibition.
