Staffordshire Figures Pre 1840

During the earlier part of the century, the potters were limited to the colored glazes that they could use that could withstand the firing temperatures.  That said, they enjoyed making animals of all kinds; contemporary subjects going about their daily chores; toys and subjects from the old testament.  Gameskeepers, shepards and gardeners were particularly popular and a romantic interpretation of the rural life was depicted through a host of young men and woman whiling away their time resting on grassy mounds or displaying their musical accomplishments.  Cow Creamers with and without mikmaids were also very popular during this time, as were underglazed figures such as the two pearlware horses in pratt ware colors that you see pictured here.  c1760-1840
